EU-China ETS Workshop 2021 was held in Beijing on 17 May, combing physical and virtual participation.

Under the context of promoting China to achieve its “2030&2060” climate targets, following the request of the high-level Policy Dialogue on ETS on 19 January 2021, the workshop is to start a process that brings together experts from EU and China for an in-depth exchange of information on and discussion of key issues related to the construction and development of China’s nationwide ETS and to provide recommendations to further develop the EU-China cooperation on ETS.

SUN Zhen, Deputy Director-General of Department of Climate Change, MEE gave welcome remarks to introduce the progress of China national ETS. Correspondingly, Mr. Damien Meadows, Deputy Director-General of EU DG CLIMA, jointly with Mr. Sebastien Paquot, the Counsellor of Climate Action and Environment from EU Delegation to China commended China’s efforts on national ETS and addressed the common challenges facing the European Green Deal and China's 2030&2060 climate targets.

The workshop covered wide-range topics, including approach of expanding industry coverage of the nationwide ETS and corresponding accounting and verification rules, how to strengthen the oversight targeting on the financial elements of nationwide ETS, and the contribution of ETS to achieving China’s “2030&2060” climate targets. The Chinese and European experts from China Environmental United Certification Center, National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation, Tsinghua University, Federal Office of Environment of Austria, International Energy Agency, etc. were invited to join the workshop and share their knowledge and experiences face to face or through video conference platform.

The workshop is under the EU-China ETS Cooperation Project, which aims at continuing to support China in building a nation-wide emission trading system that contributes to reduce its emissions.
